AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource
The AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR) was established by the National Cancer Institute in 1994 and serves as "a biorepository for HIV-infected human biospecimens from a wide spectrum of HIV-related or associated diseases, including cancer, and from appropriate HIV-negative controls." The ACSR acquires, stores, and equitably distributes these clinical samples to the scientific research community; the ACSR database contains more than 300,000 biospecimens with associated clinical data. AIDS Education Global Information System
AIDS Education Global Information System (AEGIS) is a nonprofit organization that provides a huge online repository of HIV/AIDS publications for patients and clinicians. Patient-oriented multimedia tools on a variety of HIV/AIDS-related subjects are available; Flash player is required for some videos. The "Ask the Doc" feature allows patients to question providers on HIV/AIDS topics. Most publications are patient-oriented, but the conference section offers abstracts and slide sets from relevant medical conventions. AEGIS also maintains historical records of NLM's AIDSLINE, which provided short citations for AIDS-related journal articles, monographs, conference materials, and government reports from 1980 through 2000. AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition
AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) is an international nonprofit organization devoted to the "ethical development and eventual global delivery of AIDS vaccines and other new HIV prevention options." Although the AVAC website largely reflects an advocacy audience and approach, it does offer several unique research-oriented resources and tools. Research summaries, information on ongoing and completed clinical trials, and factsheets are provided for a variety of HIV prevention topics (including vaccines, pre-exposure prophylaxis, microbicides, and male circumcision). Other useful features include an interactive map, which allows users to click on countries around the world to identify current HIV prevention trials, and a timeline of expected results from prevention trials. Another helpful research tool is the Clinical Trial Site Capacity Database, which provides "a comprehensive inventory of microbicide [and other prevention strategy] clinical trial sites' clinical, laboratory, and staffing capacity" to maximize efficient site use. AIDS-Images
AIDS-Images provides "AIDS-related images for medical professionals." Access to this excellent online image library is free, but first-time users must complete an electronic registration form to access the materials. Images may be used for educational purposes as long as they are not resold and proper attribution is given. The library is edited by Bernard Hirschel with contributions from AIDS specialists around the world. AIDS-Images contains over 1000 images of HIV complications organized by disease, organ system, and image type (photographs, graphs and texts, imaging, or gross and microscopic pathology). Images may be searched by disease or using a free-text search. Another great feature of this resource is the "image set" tool, which allows users to select images, save them in sets, and download the file in either PowerPoint or pdf format. |

HIV Sequence Database
Provided by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and funded through an NIAID grant, the HIV Sequence Database has collected all HIV and SIV sequences since 1987; sequences are obtained from GenBank, EMBL, or DDBJ. The search interface allows users to retrieve HIV and SIV sequences, which can then be aligned and used to build trees. HIV premade alignments are also available. The Geography Search Interface allows for the retrieval of HIV sequences based on geographical distribution; an interactive map is used for this feature. HIV Web Study is an excellent free online learning system for healthcare workers provided by the Northwest AETC and the University of Washington. Provided by the Los Alamos National Laboratory and funded through an NIAID grant, this database contains information about HIV-1 mutations correlated with resistance to antiretroviral medications.
